Andrea Bocelli, a DOC Tuscan!

Andrea Bocelli, a DOC Tuscan!

There are plenty of DOC, well-known Tuscans, in the world, and I don’t just mean wines like the Classic Chianti, which delights top oenology lovers, but also all those very important people that hail from Tuscany. Among them, one in particular satisfies all music-lovers thanks to his enchanting voice. Without a doubt, his fans will already know that this month’s newsletter is about Andrea Bocelli, who has gained international claim for the last 16 years of his life, and will be celebrating his 51st birthday on September 22nd

He first came to our attention in 1993, when he sang Miserere alongside Zucchero Fornaciari, performing a role that was originally Luciano Pavarotti’s. Then, from the stage of the Ariston theatre, where he won the Festival of Sanremo with his Mare calmo della sera (which Zucchero wrote using the pseudonym of Malise), he began to gain international acclaim

In 1995, together with Sarah Brightman, he sang Con te partirò, paesi che non ho mai veduto e vissuto con te adesso sì li vivrò (It's time to say goodbye, places that I've never seen or experienced with you. Now I shall...)...and from his little, native village, Lajatico, surrounded by the Valdera Tuscan hills, Bocelli began to capture the attention of the 'sacred places' of music, such as Madison Square Garden in New York, where he has played to a full house. This is not surprising, as Americans are notoriously fond of this singer, and as if to confirm that, we have recently heard that on March 2nd 2010 he will be rewarded with a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame, gaining his place on that prestigious sidewalk which represents the best of music history, and which also includes Italian singers such as Renato Caruso, Arturo Toscanini e Renata Tebaldi - whose nick-name was Voce d'angelo (voice of angel).

Even though he is now an international singer, Andrea Bocelli hasn’t forgotten his Tuscan origins: 'I see this land, I feel her urging under my feet. She's my land. She loves silence, as I do. And if I break this silence with my voice, I want to pay tribute to those places and those people.'
With these words Andrea Bocelli refers to the project (that he has realized) regarding the creation of the Teatro del Silenzio (theater of silence) in Laiatico, a silence which, once a year, in July, is filled up with the tenor's voice and all those people singing with him. The special guest of this current year has been Maestro Placido Domingo, who has honored this natural, open-air amphitheater.

And it's not over! Bocelli will begin a world tour in a few weeks: he will perform at concerts in Riga (Lettonia) on September 5th, and in New York, at the Carnegie Hall, on September 8th. He will be also performing at the O2 London Arena on September 24th, at National Indoor Arena of Birmingham, on September 27th, at Echo Arena of Liverpool on November 6th, and finally at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre of Glasgow on November 8th.

Augurando buon ascolto ai fortunati che assisteranno ad uno di questi concerti, anche per questo mese it's time to say goobye :-)
